Just Food Core Trainings are based on Popular Education that emphasizes lifting up expertise of individuals in their communities who would not otherwise be recognized as experts. Our Core Trainings foster collaborative leadership within community members and stokes their passion to share their skills back in their communities and beyond. Many are inspired to forge new career paths in fields such as culinary arts, agriculture, and policy.
Our goal is to grow the number of community leaders, teachers, and advocates working to effectively share their experience, interests, and skills with their communities.
Training of Trainers
This foundational training introduces effective tools to engage and practice while organizing, designing, and facilitating community-based workshops. It is open to those new to facilitation as well as seasoned facilitators looking to refresh their skills or ground their work in a participatory learner-centered approach.
Grounded in the framework of grassroots organizing, we provide tools to participants to critically analyze the spectrum of food justice through their own experiences. Using a participatory approach,this training aims to expand the understanding of government structure, community engagement and how to mobilize as a grassroots advocate on the individual, community, and systemic level.
Community Chef Training
Expanding on the Training of Trainers, the Community Chef training provides practical learner-centered cooking demonstration skills. This unique training lifts up home cooks as healthy food advocates that convene and engage their communities in dialogue around local, sustainably- grown, seasonal vegetables and foster direct relationships between community and farmers.
The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Training is a practical and informative training that provides critical instruction and tools to community members who want to start and maintain volunteer- driven CSA groups in neighborhoods and in workplaces.
This training will cover how to successfully manage a food justice rooted CSA group. Topics will cover CSA coordination and startup basics such as logistics, building a solid direct relationship with a regional vegetable farmer, membership recruitment and outreach, advocacy, and establishing payment options that provide access to be inclusive of all members in the community. We require that at least two people interested in collaborating to open and run a CSA commit to attend the training together.
Community- Run Farmers Marketing Training
The Community- Run Farmers Market Training is a practical and informative training that provides critical instruction and tools to community members who want to start and maintain farmers markets in their community, managed by their community.
Market management basics such as navigating city permits and regulations, establishing rural and urban vendor relationships will be covered as well as how to build community engagement and ensure the farmers market reflects the needs and demands of the neighborhood - inclusive of income and cultural food preference. We require that at least two people interested in collaborating to open and run a single market commit to attend the training together.
If your community-based organization or business would like to provide opportunities for skill building and personal development, Just Food is able to offer the above trainings on a fee-for-service basis. The package will include facilitation of any of our core trainings as well as the option of designing a curriculum tailored to your organization’s goals.
Just Food trainings have a capacity of up to 24 participants. If your group is smaller please let us know, we matchmake small organizations to collaborate for training opportunities.
