Just Food:

Our mission is to develop a just and sustainable food system in the New York City region by fostering understanding, communication and partnership among diverse groups concerned with farming, hunger, and sustainability issues. We nurture collaborative projects that develop community leadership, support the region’s farms, boost local food production, promote equitable food distribution, foster environmental stewardship and create jobs. Just Food’s four primary programs are The City Farms, Community Food Education, Food Justice and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in NYC.

Volunteer Internship Description:

Just Food provides support services to the Prince George CSA. The Prince George is a 416 supportive housing unit operated by Common Ground. In this CSA arrangement, a farmer sells “shares” in his or her farm’s upcoming harvest to residents of the Prince George and the surrounding community. The share price goes toward the costs of growing and distributing a season’s worth of produce and paying the farmer a living wage. During harvest months, the farmer delivers field-ripened fruits and vegetables once a week. A Just Food intern is needed to assist the Prince George tenant services with all related CSA operations on site.

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Data entry
  • Coordination of CSA member volunteer hours
  • Assist nutrition workshops
  • Arrange for cooking demos
  • Aid in publication of CSA newsletter and outreach materials
  • Low income outreach

Qualifications:

  • Stro ng interest in food and farm issues
  • Leadership experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Access , Microsoft, and Publisher
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work independently
  • Ability to work with diverse populations

Timeframe:

  • June through November
  • 20-25 hours a week
  • Flexible weekly schedule, evening and weekends possible
