Community Food Education Internship
Just Food:
region by fostering understanding, communication and partnership among diverse
groups concerned with farming, hunger, and sustainability issues. We nurture collaborative projects that develop community leadership, support the region’s farms, boost local food production, promote equitable food distribution, foster environmental stewardship and create jobs. Just Food’s four primary programs are The City Farms, Community Food Education, Food Justice, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in NYC.
Community Food Education Internship Description:
Just Food seeks an intern to assist with its community chef program. The community chef program trains community members from diverse backgrounds to facilitate interactive cooking demonstrations about how to prepare local, seasonal food. These workshops take place at Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) distribution sites, farmer’s markets, community gardens, health fairs, schools and community events.
Responsibilities

Assist with the coordination and logistics of the community chef program

Assist with the maintenance of the database of cooking demonstrations at farmer’s markets, community supported agriculture (csa) sites, and other community sites

Assist with the development of curriculum and materials for community chef program

Assist at community chef training meetings and cooking demonstrations
Gather and maintain a recipe library
Qualifications:
-
Strong communication, writing, editing, research, and organizational skills;

Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet research)

Enthusiasm for local, seasonal eating and cooking; community health; food access,
and small farm livelihood issues

Cooking and/or nutrition background preferred, but not required

Ability to work well in teams with diverse groups across race, class, and urban/rural
divides and a desire to work with low-income community members

Be flexible with a great sense of humor

Exhibit self-motivation, creativity and direction
-
Reliable, punctual and able to work independently as well as collaboratively
Timeframe:
-
May to November (some flexibility)

15-20 hours a week
-
9 am – 5pm, occasional evening
Compensation
-
Unpaid, college credit may be available
