[print this job posting]

Just Food:

Our mission is to develop a just and sustainable food system in the New York City region by fostering understanding, communication and partnership among diverse groups concerned with farming, hunger, and sustainability issues. We nurture collaborative projects that develop community leadership, support the region’s farms, boost local food production, promote equitable food distribution, foster environmental stewardship and create jobs. Just Food’s four primary programs are The City Farms, Community Food Education, Food Justice, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in NYC.

Volunteer Internship Description:

The City Farms program works to increase food production, marketing and distribution via community gardens throughout NYC. We partner with other NYC groups that have expertise in horticulture, marketing, garden preservation, leadership development and emergency food relief. Together, we offer workshops, training materials, and networking opportunities for NYC communities to grow and market more food within the city. Since 1997, The City Farms has grown to include 30 community gardens representing all 5 boroughs.

La Familia Verde is one of our City Farms partners; a coalition of community gardens in the Crotona, East Tremont, and West Farms neighborhoods in the Bronx. Formed in 1998, their mission is to sustain the environment and culture of the neighborhood through education, community service, and horticulture. The volunteer will assist La Familia Verde by updating their website and setting up email accounts for members, as well as training members on a combination of basic computer skills and website maintenance.

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Update website
  • Set up email accounts for garden members
  • Teach basic computer skills
  • Conduct training on website maintenance

Qualifications:

  • Experience with web design and maintenance
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Patient teacher
  • Enjoy working with a diverse group of people
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English a plus

Timeframe:

  • 3-4 hours a week
  • Flexible weekly schedule (evening and weekends preferred)
  • Potential for long term volunteer commitment working with additional gardens
