Americorps VISTA

From 2003 to 2010, Just Food hosted more than 50 AmeriCorps*VISTA members. These dedicated volunteers committed themselves to a year of service to fight poverty and increase food security in New York City. The first crop of VISTA members built the capacity of innovative food security projects throughout the city, from east Brooklyn to the South Bronx. They raised funds for East New York Farms!, supported the launch of the Forest Hills CSA, and started an urban farm stand in the Bronx which inspired Just Food’s City Farms Market program. In the final year of our VISTA funding, we hosted 23 VISTA members, including 7 who served at Just Food and 15 who served with partner nonprofit projects in the city.

Over the course of the grant, Just Food VISTAs supported dozens of CSA sites and community garden projects in low-income communities, engaged over 1,000 volunteers, and raised more than $500,000 to support food system change in New York City. Just Food VISTAs learned how to engage community members, write grants, create databases, plan events, and build community.

Just Food would like to thank AmeriCorps*VISTA for funding this program and our phenomenal VISTA members who have gone on to do even more incredible food justice work in New York City and in communities throughout the United States.
