Honoring
The McKinley Hightower-Beyah Awards were created in 2008 to commemorate and celebrate a dear friend and his lifelong
commitment to community service, education, urban agriculture, and food justice. This year the award will honor farmers, organizations, journalists, and gardeners who embody McKinley’s spirit, and like him, are working tirelessly to bring fresh, locally grown food to those who need it most.
Media Champion: Brian Halweil
Brian Halweil has been at the forefront of the “eat local” movement since his days as a student at Stanford where he set up a two-acre student run organic farm on campus. In 1997, he joined Worldwatch Institute as a Senior Researcher and John Gardner Public Service Fellow. He describes the evolving local food movement in his book Eat Here: Reclaiming Homegrown Pleasures in a Global Supermarket. He is the editor of the magazine Edible East End (launched in 2005) and copublisher of Edible Manhattan (2008) and Edible Brooklyn (2006). He writes about food from his home in Sag Harbor, New York, where he and his wife tend a home garden and orchard.
Farmers: Jean-Paul Countens and Jody Bolluyt of Roxbury Farm
Jean-Paul and Jody live in Kinderhook, New York, where they own and operate Roxbury Farm, a nationally recognized leader in organic, biodynamic, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) since 1990. In 1991, Roxbury became the first CSA farm to have a community in New York City; its partnership with Just Food’s founders began that same year. In recognition of the importance of the direct-to-consumer CSA model and with the help and advice of Roxbury Farm, Just Food began organizing CSAs throughout New York City.
Gardener/Advocate: Karen Washington
Karen Washington has lived in New York City all her life and has been a resident of the Bronx for more than 23 years. Since 1985, she has been a community activist, striving to make the Bronx a better place to live. As a community gardener, she has worked with neighborhoods to turn empty lots into verdant and thriving gardens that produce healthy food for residents. A vocal and passionate advocate, Karen has stood up and spoken out for garden protection and preservation.
Grassroots Organization: East New York Farms!
East New York Farms!, located in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, launched in 1995. ENYF is a collaborative project whose mission is to organize youth and adult residents to address food issues in their community by promoting local and regional sustainable agriculture and community-based economic development. A member of Just Food’s City Farms Market Network, East New York Farms! grows food for the community, engages youth in handson agricultural learning and leadership training, and develops economic opportunities for regional farmers, local gardeners, and other entrepreneurs. ENYF also engages in community garden preservation advocacy and nutrition education.
