Additional Products
For a few years now, CSA groups have been asking Just Food about how to get additional products (meaning products besides the vegetables that they get weekly from their CSA farmer) like meat, cheese, eggs, fruit, etc with their CSA vegetable shares. While many of the CSA farmers we work with already provide additional product shares through their neighboring farms, not all do.
We created a List of Additional Products to help CSAs find some of the products they are looking for. This list is only a compilation of some of the local farms offering these products. It is comprised of farms and farmers who are interested in providing additional products for your CSA. Some already sell to CSAs in NYC, while others are new at it. Just Food is happy to facilitate initial conversations with these farms to help your CSA and the farm figure out logistics of ordering and delivering to NYC.
What is an Additional Product Provider?
An additional product provider is usually a farmer who provides some products to a CSA that are unavailable from their CSA farmer. This provider is not a CSA farmer, but works with an already formed CSA group. Additional product farmers provide meat, eggs, dairy, flowers, fruit, honey and value-added products to a CSA in many different ways. Once the connection has been made between an additional product provider and the CSA group, the core group and the farmer can figure out the specifics of ordering and delivering. The ordering and delivering timing is usually flexible; depending on the products, it is possible to purchase additional products by season, on a weekly or biweekly basis, or only once or twice a season.
About the List of Additional Products
The List of Additional Products is comprised of farmers/providers of meat, fruit, dairy, flowers, and value added products. The list includes each farm with their name, contact information, products offered and best way to order from them. Just Food has created this list to share with the CSA in NYC groups who are interested in additional products. The CSA groups will contact the farmer directly to initiate a connection.
What is Just Food’s role?
- Helps determine logistics and delivery
- Provides technical assistance to the farm and the CSA group
- Shares farm information with CSA groups who are interested in additional products
- Sends an invitation to farmers to all Just Food events, including many networking opportunities
It is helpful for Just Food to know the strategies and methods of how each group sets up its purchasing. This helps us share the strategies and methods that farmers and groups are using so that other groups can learn from them. This way each group does not need to start from scratch. |
