WORKSHOPS

Session 1

1. CSA Outreach Material- Simple and Easy

Description to follow.

2. Keeping Our Farms- Farmland Preservation

1.2 million acres of farmland in the United States are lost to development every year, making it harder for farmers to stay on their land and for new farmers to get started. Come learn about farmland preservation, from the different ways to protect farmland to how you can help. Join Stephen Searl, Project Manager from the Peconic Land Trust, Chuck Roohr, Stewardship Manager at NJ Department of Agriculture in this informative workshop.

3. Caring for Your CSA Share- Don’t Let Those Veggies Rot!

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by your CSA share?  Tired of seeing half your share go to the compost pile?  Not sure what to do when you’re approaching your third week of cucumbers or beets? Just Food Community Chef and Columbus Circle CSA Member Martha Ma will offer tips and strategies on how to best enjoy your CSA bounty.  You will learn which vegetables are best eaten immediately, vegetable storage techniques, and food preservation strategies (including freezing, pickling, fermentation and canning).

4. Bringing Food and Farm Policy to Your CSA

A CSA is an ideal organizing tool for supporting better food and farm policy in your community and for your farmer. Find out what policy issues- from parking permits for your farmer to the New York State Council on Food Policy- are affecting your CSA on both the urban and rural sides, and how you can easily use the voice of your CSA to influence local, state and federal policy.

5. Fundraising for your CSA

Would you like additional resources for your CSA? Money for that great sign, for transportation for a trip to the farm or to subsidize share prices? Come join us for an interactive conversation about where to look for funds and some of the challenges that CSAs face in raising money.

Session 2

1. Veggies for Everybody: An Interactive Workshop on Low-Income Outreach and Membership

>Short, informal talks by two or three panelists about their experience with CSA's and economic diversity will be followed by an information sharing session with Q & A and small group conversations. It will be a fun and informative session and an opportunity to share your experiences and learn from others. You will leave this workshop with practical information about how to diversify your CSA membership.

2. New York’s Locavore Movement

Not just another way to be a crazy New Yorker, but a way to show your commitment to both broader agricultural sustainability and local farmers by adding locally grown and produced food to your diet.  Come listen to two New York locavores and learn first-hand what it means to "eat local" in the heart of the nation's largest city.

3. The Real Deal on Raw Milk

What is the hype about? Is it legal? Is it worth the fuss? Is it safe? How are farmers getting around the legal issues? How can CSAs get it? Join us in this workshop for a discussion and Q & A on raw milk.

4. Tricks for Building a Strong Core Group

Description to follow.

5. Open Space

Throughout the day conference goers will have the chance to propose additional workshop topics that they would like to see fill this space. The most popular topic will be announced at the end of lunch. We invite people who have an interest in or knowledge of the chosen topic to contribute to the discussion.
